Undisclosed Location: Where Mexican and Asian Flavours Meet in Unexpected Ways

Good things are hard to come by. Perhaps this is the principle that governs Undisclosed Location, a unique Mexican-Asian fusion restaurant in the heart of Petaling Jaya. Standing at the front of the restaurant, any new diner would have easily missed it, the signage being sneakily concealed at the top at a ninety degrees angle.

Here is the first nod towards Mervin Chin’s unconventional style, the founder of Undisclosed Location. We were ushered to the first floor of the restaurant, which has yet to shrug off its Halloween decor. Cobwebs festooned the walls. The dining area was a mellow place, of long tables lit by dim vase-sized lamps. To start our appetite, Mervin cleverly chose the prawn mango kerabu ceviche for our first serving. Those familiar with the dish will know that this is no ordinary prawn ceviche, featuring tangy kerabu with sweet mango for a tropical touch.

Once our taste buds had been awakened, as though that was necessary, it was time for the assam fish tacos, Undisclosed Location’s signature dish. A single bite, but a world of flavour. That is what best describes the unforgettable meal of crispy battered white fish topped with Melaka’s traditional sauce and fresh salsa. The perfect finger food, there is also an accompaniment of soft tacos to get the conversation going. It is a veritable cornucopia of the sea down here at Undisclosed Location because next comes the Enchilada Rusa with pesto tuna. Fans of Mexican cuisine will rejoice for this is a refreshing take on the classic Spanish potato salad, but topped with pesto-infused tuna for an extra layer of flavour.

There is no better climax for all that fishy delight than with the Tijuana fish and chips. Here, white fish in a smoked paprika-spiced batter is served alongside perfectly crisp chips, a unique twist on a crowd favourite.

The lavish spread is far from over. Looking through the menu, one can find that it is a veritable farm down here. Carnivores simply can’t say no to the Beef Fajitassucculent, carne asada-seasoned beef, served with Mexican buttered rice, warm tortillas, and grilled vegetables and corn.

Either that or the lamb shoulder spiced with chipotle and grilled to perfection. Some greens will certainly freshen up the palate, so the tender lamb shoulders strategically come with a side of roasted vegetables.

No restaurant is complete without chicken, so there’s the Pollo Fritto that caters not only to the poultry lovers, but raises the bar on fried chicken. The uniquely jalapeno-spiked batter is bound to give each bite a kick of heat and flavour.

Even with all the dishes being mentioned, we have barely scratched the surface of the culinary delight offered at Undisclosed Location. Mexican food lovers who come for a visit will find a unique and refreshing twist to the meal they have always loved. It is not same old, but same new.

And for those whose tongues have always been pampered by Asia’s diverse taste, they will find their local cuisine elevated to the international stage. All that and more at Undisclosed Location.
